Laudato Si’ is a call to action. Here are some ideas to take action and care for our common home:

1) JOIN SEASON OF CREATION

From September 1 to October 4, Christians around the globe will be praying for and taking action on behalf of creation. Join us for online prayers, help organize a symbolic action, or participate in one of the advocacy initiatives during this special time.

2) SIGN THE PETITION TO DONALD TRUMP

Donald Trump is starting to implement very dangerous anti-climate policies that will severely harm God’s creation, the poor and future generations. Given the role of the US globally, we need to stand up and raise our voice.

3)  ENCOURAGE YOUR COMMUNITY TO LEARN ABOUT LAUDATO SI’

Pope Francis has issued his encyclical Laudato Si’, a powerful message on our moral responsibility to care for creation and our brothers and sisters in poverty. Help spread the word! Encourage your parish, school or community to read the encyclical and reflect on its message, by organizing study groups or events.

4)  HELP YOUR PARISH GO GREEN

The Eco-Parish Guide helps Catholic parishes reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by taking action in relation to parish operations, the congregation, and the broader community.

5) LIVE SIMPLY: REDUCE YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT

Your “carbon footprint” is the amount of greenhouse gases produced directly and indirectly by your everyday activities, mostly by burning fossil fuels that emit carbon dioxide (CO2). In other words: When you drive a car, the engine burns fuel which creates a certain amount of CO2. When you heat your house or use electricity, then you also generate CO2. When you buy food and goods, the production of the food and goods also emitted some quantities of CO2. Follow these tips to reduce your footprint.

6) ASK YOUR INSTITUTION TO DIVEST FROM FOSSIL FUELS

Catholic institutions are divesting from fossil fuel companies and reinvesting in renewable energy as a response to Laudato Si’. Ask your diocese and local Catholic institutions (religious orders, universities, etc) to take this important step:

7) JOIN MEATLESS FRIDAYS & MONTHLY FAST

You are invited to abstain from meat on Fridays (a long Catholic tradition) to reduce our climate impacts from meat production, and/or to join the interfaith “Fast for the Climate” the first day of each month.
