2017 Calendar: Save the Dates

December 12, 2016

There will be two major global moments when Catholics are invited to take action collectively to care for our common home. Think of these as the key moments to engage your community with local creation care events and special Laudato Si’ initiatives, in solidarity with thousands of other Catholics across the globe who will take action simultaneously.

Apr 22-23: #Mercy2Earth Weekend

On the occasion of Earth Day (April 22) and Mercy Sunday (April 23), GCCM will convene a major campaign to engage Catholic grassroots communities through a compelling program and videos to reflect on Pope Francis’ recent message “Show Mercy to our Common Home”. Learn more at Mercy2Earth.org

Sep 1-Oct 4: Season of Creation

Beginning with the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation (September 1), GCCM will be joining Christian churches and faith communities around the globe in praying,  celebrating, and taking action for creation. Learn more in the ecumenical website SeasonOfCreation.org

[This is a tentative list, given that new programs will be announced in early 2017, such as the Church Sustainability Platform.]

Jan 27: “Laudato Si’ & Catholic Investing” conference (Rome)

This conference will bring together over 200 representatives of religious orders, Catholic institutions, and Roman universities to examine the links between fossil fuel divestment, investments in community-based renewable energy and Catholic organisations.  The conference will take place in the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome. More details can be found in the conference website.

Mar 1 – Apr 13: Lent

Laudato Si Animators will promote the Laudato Si message to help turn it into action in their local communities, whether that be a parish, school, religious congregation, lay group, youth organization, retreat center, Boy Scout troop, or more. The program includes training, access to special resources, and participation in a vibrant global community. Apr 29: People’s Climate March

A coalition of climate organizations have been planning a massive mobilization in Washington, D.C. within the first 100 days of the Trump administration. We will urge President Trump and the U.S. Congress to protect the climate for the poorest among us and future generations. The march will very likely have an international dimension as well, given the implications of Trump’s policies for the rest of the human family. More info here.

May 5: Catholic Divestment Announcement

Coinciding with the Global Divestment Mobilization (May 3-13) organized by our friends of the divestment movement, we will facilitate the 3rd Joint Catholic Divestment Announcement on May 5. Join the growing momentum of Catholic institutions divesting from fossil fuel companies and reinvesting in renewable energy as a response to the Pope’s Laudato Si’ call. See more about this campaign at our Divest-Invest Hub.

June 18: 2nd Anniversary of Laudato Si

In celebration of the 2nd anniversary of the encyclical, GCCM will take this time again to reflect on Laudato Si by hosting a webinar and offering some resources to deepen our understanding of this powerful document.

On October 4, we will facilitate the 4th Joint Catholic Divestment Announcement to highlight the growing movement of Catholic institutions divesting from fossil fuels and reinvesting in clean energy. See more about this campaign at our Divest-Reinvest Hub.

The 23rd session of the U.N. climate negotiations (Conference of the Parties, or COP23) will be presided by Fiji and hosted at the headquarters of the UNFCCC secretariat in Bonn, Germany from 6-17 November 2017.

Nov 17: World Day of the Poor

Pope Francis instituted the World Day of the Poor to happen every year right before the Feast of Jesus King of the Universe. GCCM intends to help demonstrate how climate injustice hurts the poor.
