The Global Catholic Climate Movement (GCCM) is an international network of Catholic individuals and organizations responding to the Pope’s Laudato Si’ call for climate justice. Founded in January 2015, GCCM has grown extremely quickly by bringing together nearly 700 member organizations and thousands of Catholics to take action through innovative campaigns that bring Laudato Si’ to life (see website).

About the role

GCCM is hiring a Program Director to launch and lead a global sustainability program for the Catholic Church. This program will give Catholic institutions such as parishes, dioceses, schools, and hospitals guidance on specific ways to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and implement sustainability initiatives and help them track their progress toward goals. By developing this first-ever global Catholic sustainability platform, the Program Director will make a decisive contribution to empowering the global Church to practice what it preaches. In parallel, the Program Director will collaborate with the broader team in the execution of other initiatives related to Catholic sustainability initiatives.

  • Lead the rollout of an ambitious and comprehensive sustainability program that empowers Catholic institutions to achieve the goals of Laudato Si’ and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Work closely with the organizing team and key Catholic organizations and partners to recruit Catholic institutions worldwide to enroll in the program.
  • In collaboration with senior staff, identify and achieve program goals for number of participants and their level of engagement.
  • Create and manage a team of expert volunteers and liaise with working groups to develop a robust, cost-effective program. Manage relationships with GCCM partners and regional or country organizations.
  • Manage program membership. Respond to questions, resolve challenges, encourage movement up the ladder of engagement. Support and educate Catholic institutions in their journey to adopt sustainability policies, and produce relevant content for the GCCM network.
  • Supervise program vendor, manage program budgets, and submit relevant reports.
  • Collaborate with GCCM’s senior management team to support related programming and initiatives as needed.
  • Work with the communications team to secure media coverage and engender support for the program.
  • Travel to areas as necessary for community partner cultivation and management.

Knowledge, skills and abilities required

Knowledge, skills and abilities required

  • At least 10 years of relevant professional experience in the environmental space, with a strong understanding of clean energy, potential tracks to stay below 1.5C in global warming, and sustainability best practices and tools.
  • Experience working in a Catholic context with a good understanding of the Church landscape and the needs of different Catholic institutions.
  • Willingness to be available non-traditional hours as needed to support program needs.
  • Ability and willingness to travel, as necessary (approximately 15%).
  • Proven experience managing a complex project from start to completion. Reliability and ability to self-direct and take initiative. Ability to manage evolving and competing priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English. Multilingual ability is a plus.
  • Comfort working independently as part of a remote global team. Experience working with international partners and an ability to communicate across cultural contexts.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite and the Google suite, with the ability to learn new applications and programs quickly.
  • Comfort working in a closely knit team that thrives on new ideas and shared values. Willingness to share humility, joy, and a sense of humor.
  • Good understanding of the Laudato Si’ message and the Catholic Church’s social teaching on ecology.
