The Climate Pilgrimage: First Steps
Climate Pilgrimage Press Conference
The Climate Pilgrimage has begun! On October 4th, pilgrims from the Philippines, the Pacific Islands, Europe, and the United States, took the first steps of their 1,500-kilometer journey from the Vatican City to the UN climate talks in Katowice, Poland.
The day before departure, the pilgrims met with the the Hon. Sergio Costa, Italy’s Minister of the Environment and Sea Protection. The meeting was followed by a press conference hosted by the environment minister, Yeb Saño, Tomás Insua, and local leaders. The pilgrims started their journey by witnessing a mass led by Pope Francis, whose Laudato Si’ encyclical on climate change serves as the inspiration and guide for this extraordinary journey.
The pilgrims will walk through mostly cold and snowy terrain, carrying the message of climate justice and the prayers of the world on their backs. Please keep them in your prayers throughout this journey. May God protect them, and may the world be moved by their courageous witness.
